Commencement exercises for the largest graduating class ever at the College of St. Scholastica will take place on Saturday, June 12, 1976 at 2 p.m. in the Duluth Auditorium. A total of 253 students will receive their baccalaureate degrees.

Commencement exercises were held at the UW-Madison on May 29, 1976 in Camp Randall Stadium. Natalie Markowski, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Alex Markowski, Thorp, received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Therapy.

Dean John L. Peters of UW-Madison has announced that Natalie graduated with Distinctive Scholastic Achievement. This is an honor which is bestowed upon those students who have earned a grade point average of 3.25 or better for at least three semesters of post-sophomore work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison.

He was on the varsity basketball team of Northland College all the while he attended college there, and he was also a member of the Business Administration Club while attending Northland.

Jerry Frese is the son of Mrs. Nathale Frese of Oxford, Wisconsin and of Emmett Frese, Thorp. Northland College is located at Ashland Wisconsin and is a private college.

News: Thorp – Western Wis. Tech Institute Graduation (27 May 1976)

At formal graduation exercises on May 27, 1976, Western Wisconsin Technical Institute, La Crosse, graduated 760 students who had successfully completed full-time instructional programs.

This was the largest graduating class in the Institute’s history. Formal graduation programs were started ten years ago in 1966, when the school first graduated students from Associate Degree courses, and was made a technical institute.

Graduating classes have grown each year since 1966, when 42 students were granted Associate Degrees, and 111 graduates received vocational diplomas, for a total graduating class of 153.

This years, 1976, the Associate Degree was awarded to 433 graduates who successfully completed two-year technical programs, and 327 received diplomas for completing one and two-year vocational courses.

Among the 1976 graduates from the Thorp area were: Bernadine Mertens, Medical Assistant, and Donna Panek, Commercial Art.

Marcia Harycki, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Stanley A. Harycki, Thorp, is among 94 winners of Stout Foundation scholarships announced by Jack Wile, Executive Director of the Foundation.

Miss Harycki, a graduate student majoring in Industrial Education at UW-Stout, was awarded the $150 Karen Fladoes Memorial Scholarship from the Foundation.

Wile said that winners were selected by a committee, which was composed of students and faculty members, who reviewed more than 350 applications submitted earlier this years by Stout students. Payments will be made by the Foundation in August, after winners have enrolled for the fall semester of the 1976-77 year, he said.

Miss Etten is the daughter of the late Richard Etten. She will graduate with a degree in Elementary Education. Her fiancé is employed at Memorex Corporation in Eau Claire.

An August 14, 1976 wedding at the Ecumenical Religious Center in Eau Claire is being planned by the couple.

Leo Dulek passed away at St. Joseph’s Hospital, Marshfield, Tuesday evening, June 22, 1976.

Funeral services will be held Friday morning, June 25 at 10:30 a.m. at St Bernard’s Catholic Church, Thorp. Burial will be made in the parish cemetery.

Rosary will be receited at the Thorp Funeral Home, tonight, Thursday at 8:00 p.m.
