John F. Tunnock, 62, of Greenwood, formerly of Florida, passed away at his home
on Friday, June 30, 2023, with his family and friends at his side.
John Franklin Tunnock was born on January 30, 1961, in Fort Myers, FL to Matthew
J. and Edna M. (Springer) Tunnock. He was raised and received his education in
Florida. After graduating from high school in 1979, John had two passions in
life. He wanted to serve in the U.S. Navy and drive tractor trailer over the
road. He did both of them. John served twelve years in the Navy, where he was on
the U.S.S. John F. Kennedy, U.S.S Yosemite and the U.S.S. Mahan. After the Navy,
he drove semi-truck for 25 years until an being involved in a semi-truck
accident. He became a transporter after the accident, and hauled campers and
trailers.
John had many interests, but especially liked motorcycles, boats, and big toys.
He made many friends on his journey through life in the Navy and driving semi.
He is survived by one sister: Bobbie Ann Seward and one brother: Jim (Gail)
Tunnock, both of Florida; his fiancée of eight years: Darlene Johnson of
Greenwood; nieces, nephews, and other relatives. Close to him were Dave
Pichelman, Nikoli Pichelman, Amber Schoepflin, Arron Tyndall, Samanta Battisti,
Mike Jr. (Chris) Johnson, Shannon May, Jaidyn Bradley, Sophia Pichelman, and
Ryleigh Pichelman. They were all a part of his extended family. John also had
many Shipmates and Trucker friends. He will be missed by all. He was preceded in
death by his parents.

Williams, Jon Jay (24 June 1960 – 5 July 2023)
Jon J. William, 63, of Thorp, passed away peacefully, at home on Wednesday, July
5, 2023.
Jon Jay Williams was born on June 24, 1960, in Friendship, to Robert L. and
Shirley J. (Wenzel) Williams. He was raised and received his education in the
Adams/Friendship area. After schooling, Jon began driving truck, and drove for
several companies over the years. He was united in marriage to Fran (Hacker)
Wendt on October 27, 1997, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Thorp. Due to poor
health, Jon retired and resided in Thorp until his death.
He had many interests, that included camping, 4-wheeling, hunting, shooting
guns, classic cars, riding the Harley with his wife, and especially loved
spending time with his family; just being a family man.
Anyone knowing Jon knew he always just told you the way it was and was admired
for his humor and goodwill. A God-fearing man.
Jon will be dearly missed by his wife, Fran, of Thorp; with their children:
Robert (Cindy) Evers of Dorchester, Jon Jr. (Heather) Williams of Thorp, Mindy
(Alberto) Yates of Houston, TX, Ashlyn (Seth) Krings of Wisconsin Rapids, Coty
Evers of Fall Creek, Curtis Wendt (Kiana Walters-Williams) of Pulaski, Kayla
Williams (Blake Reid) of Cadott, Allison (Marcus) Phillips of Green Bay, and
Monica (Edgar) Gutierrez of Ewa Beach, HI; 24 grandchildren; 3
great-grandchildren; two brothers: Kirk Williams (Gail Bryant) of Sorrento, FL,
and Robert Williams of Adams; nieces, nephews, stepsiblings, other relatives and
friends.
He was preceded in death by his father and stepmother: Robert (Charlotte)
Williams, his mother and stepfather: Shirley (Lee) Lang; his sister: Sandi
Turenne, and grandson Adrian Williams.
A memorial service will be held at Thorp Funeral Home on Saturday, July 15,
2023, at 3 p.m. with Rev. Phil Beukema officiating. Visitation will be held at
the funeral home on Saturday, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Lion David Williams of the Loyal Lions Club was honored as a Melvin Jones Fellow
(MJF) at the club’s recent annual awards banquet held at Meadowview Golf Course
and Restaurant in Owen on June 28.
Named for Lions Club International’s founder, MJF is Lions Clubs International’s
second-highest award. It can be awarded to any Lions Club member or nominated
individual in recognition of his or her humanitarian qualities such as
generosity, compassion and concern for the less fortunate.
“Lion Dave exemplifies what Lions are supposed to be. He has been a strong
advocate for the Lions supporting local charities and causes, a leader in the
fight against blindness, an advocate for those with disabilities and needs in
our community. I can think of no one who deserves this honor more. I am
extremely proud to present this to Lion Dave and welcome him into the ranks of
the Melvin Jones Fellows,” said incoming club president Michael Conard.
The Loyal Lions currently have five Melvin Jones Fellows in the club.

In a ceremony at the Loyal American Legion July 11, the Greenwood Quilts of
Valor awarded Bruce Hadler a quilt to thank him for his service.
Hadler joined the U.S. Army in 1971. He received his basic training at Fort Ord,
Calif., and Advanced Individual Training (AIT) at Fort Riley, Kan., where he was
stationed for three years with A Company 1st Battalion 63rd Armor 1st Infantry
Division (Big Red One). During his service, he was deployed to Germany twice to
participate in NATO campaigns called “Reforger Exercises.” He served as a tank
commander. He was discharged in 1974 with the rank of Specialist Fourth Class.

entertaining duo of Jim Leichtnam and Mark Peterson. The gathering included a
50-year reunion cake, booklets with memories and photos from the past reunions,
a piñata, kamikaze shots and a toast to family. Another potluck dinner was held
on Saturday night. The Don Leichtnam, Jack Leichtnam and Donna Anderson families
won “Perfect Attendance by Cousins” awards.

Richard H. Carlberg Jr., 73, Loyal, passed away on July 25, 2023, at St. Mary’s
Hospital in Duluth, Minn.
He is survived by his wife, Sally; his sons, Eric (Beth) Carlberg and Michael
(Sara) Hart; and his grandchildren, Oliver, Charles and Christina. He is further
survived by his siblings: Anna Rueth, Aaron (Sue) Carlberg, Dorothy Roback and
Debra (Brad) Rowe; and nieces and nephew: Mary Anne (Walt) Medlock, Jen (Chris)
Carlberg-George, Travis Rueth, Shana (Dustin) Kind, Jesse Rowe and Breanna Rowe.
Richard was born in Valparaiso, Ind., on Feb. 15, 1950, to Richard Sr. and Irene
Carlberg. Richard attended Boone Grove High School in Boone Grove, Ind., before
enlisting in the Army. He served in Germany and Vietnam, where he was severely
wounded by a landmine.
Richard married his wife, Sally, on May 19, 1977, in Valparaiso, Ind. They moved
around the country throughout the 80s, and eventually settled in Wisconsin in
1987. Later in life, Richard would describe himself as a “truck driver with a
serious farming habit.” He retired from driving in his mid-sixties.
A memorial will be held at noon on Oct. 21, 2023, at the American Legion Hall in
Loyal, with lunch to follow.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Wounded Warrior
Project in Richard’s name.

Amya Lee LaMarr is excited to operate her business out of her own storefront in
Loyal. She opened ALL Boutique last week at 132 N. Main St. The boutique offers
a variety of women’s clothing and unisex customizable shirts, along with some
accessories and home decor items.
Opening her own store was the next step for LaMarr to advance her business. A
Greenwood native, LaMarr enjoys fashion and helping people look their best.
“It started during COVID, because everyone was bored and trying to come up with
an idea of what to do,” she said. “I had the idea of opening a clothing store.”
LaMarr told her sister, who initially thought she was joking, but soon found out
otherwise.
In July 2021, LaMarr’s mom opened Sage Salon and Spa in Greenwood. Later that
year, around November or December, LaMarr started putting items in her mom’s
store to sell. Eventually, she outgrew that space.
“People wanted more, so I started looking at properties and this one was
available,” said LaMarr.
She started moving things into the Loyal location in June, calling it ALL
Boutique after the initials in her name. She has women’s clothing pieces such as
tank tops, dress shirts, dresses, shorts, jeans and light sweaters that she will
change out seasonally. In the fall, she plans to sell things like flannel
shirts, leggings, sweatshirts and shackets (a cross between a flannel shirt and
a jacket).
“Last fall, I sold a lot shackets,” she said. “Everyone has supported me really
well.”
Another unique aspect of her business is her ability to make custom t-shirts and
other apparel with the customer’s saying or graphic on it. Although she didn’t
really start making t-shirts for customers until this last spring, it’s quickly
become a popular service.
“I’ve done group t-shirts for Rock Fest, and track, baseball and softball
t-shirts,” said LaMarr. “I also made all the shirts for my grandparents’
business (Rumors on Main in Loyal) and fair shirts.”
She uses the directton film (DTF) method, a process that transfers prints onto
fabric or other substrates using a heatpress mechanism. Unlike the
direct-to-garment (DTG) method, which only works on cotton fabrics, the printer
DTF method can work on cotton and poly blends. DTF printing involves printing an
artwork on a special film and transferring said film onto fabric or other
textiles. LaMarr works with another businessperson who prints the graphics for
her, and then LaMarr transfers the graphics onto the fabric using a heat press.
LaMarr typically submits a shirt order once a week and tries to have the product
to the customer within seven to 10 business days. There are 70 t-shirt color
choices. She can also print on long-sleeve t-shirts, crew neck sweatshirts and
hooded sweatshirts. She has sizes S–5X available in graphic shirts. Typically
she carries sizes S–3X in the store, but can order bigger sizes.
“I can do almost any size that anyone needs. It’s important for people to be
comfortable,” said LaMarr. She also sells crossbody bags, jewelry, shoes,
fashion caps, thermoses, mugs, car air fresheners, laundry detergent scent packs
and home decor such as porch signs. Most of these items are made by fellow small
business owners. “The signs are made from people in Wisconsin. The tumblers are
all small business owners. The laundry soaps and car diffusers are from a lady
out east that created a more natural, organic alternative to regular laundry
detergent. I’m planning to sell coffee this fall from a veteran-owned coffee
company,” said LaMarr. “It’s important to support small businesses.” She also
emphasized the value in offering fair prices at a convenient location.
“I try to be affordable for everybody,” she said. “And it’s local. You don’t
have to drive all the way to Marshfield — you can stop here and see what we
have. Maybe you’ll find something you like.”
Tentative store hours are Monday and Tuesday 11 a.m.–6 p.m., Wednesday 11 a.m.
–3 p.m., most Thursdays 2:30–6 p.m., Saturday 10 a.m.–2 p.m. and Sunday 11
a.m.–2 p.m. LaMarr may also have pop-up hours on Fridays.

A three-day family reunion was held for the family of John and Anna Elsinger in
Loyal on July 21-23 at the Loyal Sportsman’s Club. After five years of farming
in Hartford, John and Anna Elsinger moved to Loyal in 1906, where they farmed on
26th Road for another 37 years, raising 12 children, before they moved into the
city of Loyal. About 130 attendees participated in this family event, down to
the sixth generation. Elsinger descendants came from all over the United States,
including Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Michigan, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New
Mexico, Maryland, Ohio, South Dakota and many from all over Wisconsin. A
meet-and-greet was held Friday night. On Saturday, all throughout the day into
the evening, activities were held and ended with a farewell brunch on Sunday.

– New House of Mercy Coordinator (Aug 2023)

Nan Sowieja has recently been named the new program coordinator at the House of
Mercy (HoM) in Loyal. A native of Greenwood, Sowieja will replace Judy Morrow,
who has retired after serving as the coordinator at HoM for the past several
years.
After getting married to her husband, John, in 1985, Sowieja lived briefly in
Marshfield and Madison before moving out to Colorado where she stayed raising
her family and working for 29 years. While in Colorado, she worked for the
Garfield County Housing Authority. As part of the job, she worked with the
homeless and low-income families, to help them get out of poverty.
“It was so rewarding to see their faces light up when you are able to help them
out,” she said in a press release. “I love the reward that comes with assisting
these folks, whether it is a small or big win.”
Sowieja resides in Willard, and she and her husband enjoy outdoor activities
such as hiking, biking, camping and pickle ball.

New Barbershop Name and Owner (Aug 2023)

It had been more than two years since customers walked through the doors of
Dave’s Barbershop in Granton, but after some brief remodeling these past few
months, the business is open again with a new name, a new look, and a new face
behind the chair.
Now named Fades and Foils Hair Studio, the little business at 212 Maple St.
reopened for business Aug. 1. Shannon Gunther is operating the studio and will
be offering services such as haircuts, facial waxing, hair coloring and other
hair-care needs. Already on her first day of business, Gunther saw a good sign
of support from the community.
“On the first day, I was fully booked,” she said. “The Granton Rotary even came
down to check in and see the building. There were a lot of old stories they were
telling that day.”
Though she’s not a Granton native, Gunther is tied up in the legacy of Dave’s
Barbershop. After it was built in 1956, the small building was owned and
operated by its namesake, Dave Lavey, for more than 40 years before he sold the
barbershop to Candace Andrews, who then operated the business with Dave staying
on until 2012 when he retired. Andrews continued on for several years
afterwards, finally closing down in May 2021 after 65 years of business when no
one could be found to continue it. That situation changed after Gunther met her
fiancé, who is Andrews’ nephew.
“I met my fiancé and he lives in Marshfield,” she said. “I ended up moving here.
I was in Wisconsin Rapids and before that, Appleton, so I’m not from too far
from here.”
Before moving to Marshfield, Gunther said she had gained plenty of experience in
hair care. She graduated from hair school back in 2012 and from there learned
the trade at different salons. She started with women’s hair before graduating
to taking care of men’s hair in 2015, which she did for the next several years.
“I started with women’s hair and did that for a few years,” she said. “Then I
did just men’s cuts and I did that for six or seven years, and took a few years
off of doing hair before coming here.”
The call to work in the hair business again brought Gunther back and drove her
to remodel the old barbershop. Creating hairstyles and helping people feel happy
about their appearance, as well as the connections a stylist establishes with
their customers, are some of the most appealing parts of the job to Gunther.
“I think it’s just like the practice, the connection you get with people. Doing
hair and making people feel good. I have always believed that if you look good,
you feel good. It’s just kind of bringing your ideas to life and putting your
personal touch on stuff.”
As for the future of the business, Gunther said it is her hope that Fades and
Foils Hair Studio will be a pillar in the Granton community for years to come,
just as Dave’s Barbershop was before it.
“I’m looking forward to just being able to serve the community and being close
by for anyone to use,” she said.
Fades and Foils Hair Studio is open Tuesday through Friday each week. On
Tuesdays and Fridays, it is open from 1 p.m. until 7 p.m. while on Wednesdays
and Thursdays, it is open from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. Appointments can be made by
